Cleddau Reach V.C. Primary School News

Welcome to the Cleddau Reach VC School section of the newsletter. The items below provide information about some of the events and activities that have taken place recently.

During the 2010-2011 school year the staff and Governing Body have worked hard to establish the new school and to ensure that there has been continuity within the standards of teaching, learning and achievement on both Bases.

The Headteacher, Governing Body and staff of the school have focused on ways of providing a motivating curriculum that is suited to the needs of each individual learner. They have ensured that a wide range of educational visits, extra-curricular clubs and sporting events have been available to the children.

Governors and staff have also worked closely with representatives from Pembrokeshire County Council to ensure that the new school building will provide an outstanding and modern learning environment for the children within the schools catchment area. Included within the newsletter are the ground plan for the new Cleddau Reach School building and a three dimensional plan.

Each year the school reviews and develops key areas of work. These areas are outlined in the School Improvement Plan. The priorities during 2010-2011 were to establish the new school in a positive way and to further improve standards within teaching and learning.

Opportunities have been provided for the children of both Bases to work together within areas such as educational visits, school council meetings, Junior singing and the Pembrokeshire Enterprise Fair. The children have also combined their musical talents to create a CD 'Sing Cleddau Sing' which has so far sold over 200 copies. The CD costs £7.50 and copies can be ordered from both the Burton and Llangwm Bases.

At the same time the staff and Governing body have worked hard to ensure continuity in terms of the day to day running of each Base and the celebration of traditional events such as Harvest, Christmas and St. David's Day.

The school has successfully been assessed for the Healthy Workplace Award and is working towards the Gold Award for the Sustainable Schools scheme. As part of our review of Mathematical teaching a successful and well attended curriculum evening was held during the spring term. The school has continued to work closely with local secondary schools to ensure a smooth transition for the children from each of the local communities.

The teachers and governors are always keen to strengthen links between the school, parents and the local communities. During 2010-2011 the school has been actively involved in many different community projects.

Links have been maintained with the local churches and institutions within the catchment area. Reverend Jane Goupillon and Reverend Graham Lloyd have been regular visitors to the school and the school uses different talents from within the community to enrich the learning of the children. On Thursday 15th September the children from Burton Base welcomed the Bishop of St. David's the Rt. Revd Wyn Evans to a service of dedication at St. Mary's Church Burton. Bishop Wyn congratulated the children on the quality of their singing and the clear ways in which they spoke during the service.

The children on the Llangwm Base celebrated Harvest Festival at St. Jerome's Church with separate infant and junior services. Reverend Jane Goupillon led the service and funds were raised for Ty Hafan.

The children on the Burton Base celebrated Harvest Festival at St. Mary's Church. Reverend Graham Lloyd led the service and funds were raised for Action Aid.

On Wednesday 5th October a special assembly for all Foundation Phase children and staff took place at Llangwm Base. On the same day all Key Stage 2 children and staff attended a special assembly for them at the Burton Base.

The worship candle to commemorate two hundred years since the foundation of the National Society was received into both Bases. A special daily prayer was said in both English and Welsh. The candle has been taken to each of the Church Schools within the St. David's diocese.

The Friends of the School organisations on both Bases have continued to support the school in a variety of ways and have met on a regular basis. During 2011-2012 as we move towards the completion of the new school building meetings will take place to establish a single friends of the school group.

During the past year the children of the school have been involved in a wide range of sporting activities.

A successful Junior Swimming Gala and Sports Afternoon was held for the children of each Base during the Summer Term.

Many pupils successfully and sportingly represented the school at football, rugby, cricket, swimming, tennis, cross-country and athletics. The school cricket team won the local area competition and reached the Pembrokeshire County Finals.

The school was represented by twenty-nine children at the Pembrokeshire Cross Country event at Oakwood on Thursday 13th October. The children all competed well and we were very proud of the fact that Alaric Jones (Year 6 Burton Base) came first in the Year 6 race. This meant that Alaric has achieved first place in the County Cross Country over the past four years, a wonderful achievement.

Cleddau Reach VC Primary School Young Reporters Section

In this section we have included a number of reports written by children at the school.

Rt Reverend Bishop Wyn from St. David's blessing and dedicate a new section of the church

Visit by Rt Reverend Bishop Wyn
to St Mary's Church Burton

On 15th September 2011, the Bishop from St. David's came to St. Mary's Church in Burton to bless and dedicate a new section of the church for the children. We performed two songs, gave readings and some of us played our musical instruments. While the Bishop was blessing the new area, the school and the public congregation were saying prayers of thanks. Bishop Wyn spoke and said some lovely words. After the service, the public could stay and have food and drinks. We all had a lovely time and it was nice to be part of something special.

Cleddau Reach VC School Burton Base's Harvest Festival 2011 at St Mary's Church, Burton

Our Harvest Festival took place on Thursday 13th October. The church was full with parents! We sang harvest songs, some played harvest pieces on their musical instruments and some of us had to speak about harvest and the importance it has here and around the world. We thought about the farmers and the fishermen. We were thanking God for the harvest and all that he does for us. We practised very hard and the service went well.

We are thankful to all for the generous donations for our harvest display. The display was so beautiful with all of the fruit and vegetables. During a hymn, we had a collection for the charity we are sponsoring this year. The charity that we support is Action Aid. It helps children in Malawi who are less fortunate than us. Reverend Graham Lloyd gave a blessing for harvest. He thanked us for all of our hard work. We all had a great time. When we got back to school, we were lucky enough to try the Harvest loaf which was yummy!

Llangwm Base Harvest Festival

On Friday the 14th October, Cleddau Reach Llangwm Base, celebrated their Harvest Festival at St Jerome's Church. It was a lovely autumn day to walk through the village and we thank everyone for all the food and gifts they brought to the church.

The children brought beautifully decorated envelopes with donations to Ty Hafan children's hospice.

The children sang with great enthusiasm and gusto and informed the congregation about the amount of food wasted throughout the world.

It was Thursday 13th October, all of Cleddau Reach VC School Cross Country runners were getting all excited about the race at Oakwood. We all had new luminous pink tops to wear. After a very busy morning in school, we left early to get ready and be brought to Oakwood in time for the races. In the Year 4 race, Lizzie came 4th! and Alaric was 1st in the Year 6 race. The runners from both Bases worked very hard and our school result was our best ever.

Our Visit to Carew Cheriton ControlTower

During the summer term the children in Year 5 and Year 6 were finding out about life on the Home Front during World War Two. As part of our work we had a fantastic visit to the Control Tower at Carew Cheriton. During the visit we met many interesting people who shared their memories of life in Pembrokeshire during the war. We were especially interested in discovering about the air crews who flew from local airfields. In the newsletter we have included a poem by Eden that was inspired by our visit, a letter of thanks by Dan and a photograph showing some of us on the trip.

Silence
Silence, nervous, terrified,
Is he coming back?
Hoping it's a dream,
Morse code in my head,
But not reality,
Still silence, quiet as a mouse.

A shiver down my spine,
But no-one gives up hope.
A gloomy, freezing room,
I send another message,
Where are you?
Please return home!

Anxiously I wait,
Horrible thoughts
Flowing through my head,
A screech, a noise, I
look through the window,
He's coming, He's safe,

The room lights up,
Smiles around,
Silence disappears,
Happiness begins.

Dear Staff at Carew Control Tower,

Thank you for this amazing opportunity to see and learn all about World War I and World War II. We very much appreciated how much time and effort all of the staff have put into making our trip exceptional. We especially liked the part where you could dress up in traditional World War II clothes. We also liked the part where the children could have a go at trying the Morse code. We could not ever imagine how this trip could have got any better.

So thank you again for making Thursday 9th June such a special day for all of Year 5 and Year 6 at Cleddau Reach VC School.

Yours sincerely

Dan Phillips

MEMORIES OF BURTON SCHOOL

Dear Mr Wildman,

I am putting together a commemorative book for Burton School and asking people to contribute memories and information which they think will be of interest. The aim is to get as comprehensive a history as possible while creating something that will be a treasure to everyone who has had contact with Burton School. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to mention this to as many people as possible and whether you would be good enough to contribute something yourself to be included in the book. I have set up this email address:-

Georgina has unfortunately moved. In the interim please pass all information to:-

david@davidwildman.co.uk

Kind regards,

Georgina Al-Kanaan (nee Alderson), former pupil and mother of current pupil
