The Amalgamation of Burton V.C. Primary and Llangwm V.C. Primary
Since June 2009 the Governing Bodies of Burton and Llangwm VC Schools have held many meetings concerning the future provision of education within the two areas. The Governing Bodies of Burton and Llangwm VC Schools have now jointly agreed, with the full support and agreement of Pembrokeshire County Council and the St David's Diocesan Education Authority to effect the merger of the schools.
The merged school will operate on the two existing sites from September 2010 and will be named Cleddau Reach V.C. Primary School .
It is also intended at some time in the future to build a new school within Llangwm to accommodate Cleddau Reach V.C. Primary on a single site. It is hoped that funding for the new school building will be granted soon and that the new school will be completed by the middle part of this decade.
In September an enlarged Governing Body for the new school will be formed and my responsibilities as Headteacher will extend across both sites of the new school. This year the school governors and staff from both schools have met regularly to ensure that the transition to the amalgamated school will be as smooth as possible.
It will be vital for the children in both schools that amalgamation brings positive changes but at the same time some sense of continuity on both bases. My aim is that the many positive features of both schools will be combined to develop a new school which will provide an outstanding education for the children from both areas.
At the start of the Autumn Term the staff working on both sites will work closely together when planning for the new school. This will involve the sharing of expertise on different parts of the school curriculum and whole school training linked to issues for development.
Traditional concerts, celebrations and fund raising will continue within both sites until the completion of the new school building. However, there will also be opportunities for the children from both sites to work together on areas such as singing, school council meetings and educational visits.
Over the past nine years I have been privileged to work as Headteacher with the staff, governors and children of Llangwm V. C. Primary School . From September I look forward to developing this work across both bases of Cleddau Reach V. C. School . My main aim will be to ensure that we develop a friendly and happy school where all children can learn to the very best of their abilities.
SILVER AWARD FOR LLANGWM SCHOOL
Pupils at Llangwm VC School have been congratulated on achieving the Silver Sustainable Schools Award.
They were presented with the award by Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and the Welsh Language, at a special assembly.
During the assembly, pupils from across the school shared what they had been learning and the practical action they have taken to gain the award.
The school gained their award for work on the topics Waste and Litter, Transport and Water. Their
work included growing potatoes, a visit to the Withyhedge recycling centre to see what happens to the orange bags, a campaign to improve road safety outside their school, and clearing litter from local areas including the local graveyard and sports ground.
The children also studied the large global challenges we face such as climate change and poverty, and how they link to local choices.
In their work towards the award, the school has been supported by parents and the local community as well as Pembrokeshire Coast National Park , Darwin Science, Keep Wales Tidy, Pembrokeshire County Council, Puffin Produce and many others.
Staff and pupils are now setting their sights on the Gold award, and are hoping to join the eight other schools in the County who have already achieved this outstanding standard.

Links with the Community / Friends of the School
The school once again presented a variety of musical items at the Llangwm Village Hall St David's Day celebration. Each item was very well received by the audience.
On Tuesday 6 th July we are once again planning for the junior children to perform an outdoor concert at the school between 6.30pm and 8.00pm. The concert will provide an opportunity for the children to share a wide range of musical items with parents, governors and members of the local communities.
Sporting Clubs / Sport
This term staff at Llangwm School have offered after school or lunchtime clubs in the following areas: cricket, hockey , tennis, film making, environmental and Infant Games.
Recently the Year 3 and Year 4 children took part in the Pembrokeshire Tag Rugby Tournament, winning several of their matches.
Our Year 4 tennis team took part in the Pembrokeshire Mini Tennis Competition, with the boys' team winning all their group matches and narrowly losing to Ysgol Glan Cleddau in the Pembrokeshire County final.
Llangwm will be participating this term in the primary school cricket competitions and district events for athletics. The rugby teams will also be able to participate in a tournament with the Scarlets on Newgale beach in July.
Young Reporters Section
In this section we have included reports written by children within the school. The children at Llangwm School enjoy following the news and look forward to the arrival each week of a national Paper for children called ‘First News'.
Llangwm Village Litter Pick
The children in our class wanted to help the local environment by picking up litter. Our teacher Mr. Benbow put us in pairs and each person was given a black bag, gloves and an apron. During the day we worked at the park, church and some local footpaths. Unfortunately, we found a lot of litter such as crisp packets, coke bottles and tin cans.
At the end of the day we felt happy that we had tidied up our local community as part of the Clean Up Wales Campaign. Litter can spoil the lovely communities where we live and children at Llangwm School have designed posters to remind people to get rid of their litter in sensible ways by either putting it in a bin or re-cycling it.

The Girls Kwik Cricket Competition
Recently the girls cricket team from Llangwm School took part in the Pembrokeshire Girls Cricket Festival. We were a little nervous because most of us hadn't played in a cricket competition before. However, we had a really exciting day winning two of our four matches and improving our cricket skills. Our coach Mr. Groves was really proud of the way we worked together as a team. We all enjoyed the day and wish we could do it again !

Our Special Assembly
On Wednesday 9 th June Llangwm V.C. Primary was awarded the Silver Sustainable School Award at a special assembly. In the assembly children from different classes showed the work they had undertaken for the award. My job was to introduce the assembly and to link all the different items. I was nervous but the assembly went very well. It was interesting to hear about all the different projects in each class. Our special visitor Councillor George congratulated all the children and staff on the quality of their sustainable work.
