BURTON WEDNESDAY CLUB
The Burton Wednesday club was formed some 21 years ago with the
idea of friends getting together in the locality to keep in touch.
The club was originally started by a few people such as Elvit Bowen,
Nancy Bowen, Jack Campbell, Dylis Campbell, Betty Blight to name
but a few, to give and receive pleasure in the community by getting
together once a fortnight to have tea and biscuits in the 'Houghton
Village Hall' to discuss places of interest, holidays etc, and generally
keeping in touch as to what's going on in the area. It was decided
in those early days that members should be from areas such as Hill
Mountain, Burton, Sardis, Llangwm, and Rosemarket and generally
around Burton parish, by and large the areas from the club have
stayed the same to this day.
SO WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER OF
THE CLUB?
Members are invited to lunch at 'The Jolly Sailor' at Burton Ferry, for
a two-course meal, which is altered each time we visit. The meal
is subsidised by the Pembrokeshire county council, which means that
at present we only pay a low cost of £4.00 each (where can
you get a meal today at this price?)
After lunch, we all gather at the Jubilee Hall Houghton where we usually
have a guest speaker followed by tea and biscuits, so that we can
chat to all our friends, making it a splendid afternoon out. For
some people, this is their only way of meeting new friends (including
new ones as a result of being a member of the club).
Not only this, but we organise four day trips a year to various
places of interest, and members are asked for suggestions on this
subject, and what's more, the coach trips are mostly FREE- all we
ask members to pay for are meals. The trips are free as a result
of the club having raffles, coffee mornings etc.
At Christmas time, all members are invited to a Christmas dinner,
usually at no cost again (apart from drinks) during December.
The most important thing about the club is FRIENDSHIP.
The cost of the benefits is a mere £10.00 per year (split in
two parts-£5.00 every six months). You can obtain full details
from any of the committee members listed below or indeed any member-
